Many driving ranges provide lessons. I think you two would enjoy the stress relief of just drilling golf balls as a couple. If you are not willing to pay for lessons then you can still go and just watch how the others are hitting them or just ask someone everyone loves sharing tips on how to improve another person’s game. Enjoy

Go to a practice range and give it your best shot. Try it for half an hour. Then get lessons from a pro.

Here is a nice article that explains all of the different clubs and when they are used. Maybe this would be a good place to start..

I first started out by reading a bit about it after getting a starter set off ebay….I would say try heading to a driving range that has rental clubs, try hitting a bucket or two of balls to see if you enjoy it, then see about getting your own set as well signing up for a few lessons, esp if you can find a PGA certified teacher. There are also a few good websites with tips and instuction such as golf.com and pga.com has an instruction section as well..may also want to look at playgolfamerica.com hope this helps.

I second the lessons approach. I’ve never taken lessons and regret it because it’s very hard to un-learn bad habits that you will get into without proper instruction.

I know it sounds obvious, but start practicing consistantly. In the past that meant having to truck to a range every time and few people can afford the time and money to do this. So most beginners start out enthusiast and end up with their clubs in the garage. Now that has changed. There is a new off-course safe golf ball called the almostGolf ball. It flies a limited distance and doesn’t break anything. It actually has CO2 pressure inside so it gives honest feedback on your shots.
I recommend using it to hit 20-40ft shots into a bucket or target around your backyard, park, schoolyard or even parkinglot that is walking distance from your home. Try and do this for just 15-20 minutes a day. (casual, no pressure) It sure beats the pressure of a driving range.
You will begin to learn small things every time you swing. As you begin to be able to experiment and learn, you can begin to hit longer shots and more consistant shots.
Then go to the golf range and see your improvement. Casually practicing every day helped me begin to hit the ball without thinking about it and improved my consistancy. It also helped me understand the Golf Channel Monday clinics. They are definately something to watch and try to copy. And if you can simply hit shots anywhere you will begin to feel a lot more comfortable on the golf course.
Also check out videojug.com and watch their various golf instructional videos. They are basic and very informative.
Good luck.

Spend $12 and buy Hogan’s book “Five Lessons, the Fundamentals of Golf”. It will give you an excellent start on all the basics of the golf swing. Then go to the range and practice some and then take some lessons from a professional. By the end of summer you might be ready to venture out on the course and actually play.
