what would be a good score in golf for nine holes?

I’ve been golfing for quite a while now id say 7, 8 years and i don’t seem to be improving the way i should be. I’m on the golf team for my high school and at our country club (a par 37 front nine) i average a 42. I just can’t seem to break 40. Is 42 a good average score or am I just bad?

What is a typical good golf score for 9 holes, depending on experience level?

For instance, what would be considered good for a beginner vs amateur vs experienced golfer, in terms of how far over (or.. dare I say.. under) par you are?

I understand that the course difficulty can vary, so lets just assume it’s a lower-priced country club of mid-level difficulty, like I’m used to golfing at.
