What is the average golf score needed to join a high school golf team?

Hi! I am a freshman, and I would like to try golfing this spring. What is usually the average score (approximately) needed to make the team? Thanks for your help!

On our local team, you would need to shoot in the 80s for junior varsity and 70s for varsity. It will vary based on your school and location. Good luck.

I agree with the previous, it depends on location some schools you must shoot in the 70s or mid-high 30s through 9 to play varsity. My school howeveer is a smaller school and so we had 8 varsity kids and our number one was a 1 handicap, two was a 3, number three was 5 handicap and then from there it went down. The average score through 9 holes at our school was about a 43 which in a bigger state at a bigger school wouldnt even place in JV matches. So if you are a single digit handicapper you have a good shot but since youre just a freshman it isnt awful if you only make JV.

Like it was said above it usually depends upon location and how big a school. For a boy’s team (my boyfriend was the number one) they usually like a single digit handicap and the number one was a scratch golfer. But generally the JV is happy with bogey golf. For a girls teams (I’m the number one) they are usually take bogey golf but I’m a 3 handicap and the JV is okay with taking beginners. Generally at a tryout the coaches will take into account what they see beyond just the golf game, if you look like a hard worker or if its clear that you’re having a bad day, and if you have a lot of potential. Generally freshmen can go either way, it depends upon how much experience you already have and they’ll keep most freshmen on JV to “save them” for following years.
Hope this helped and good luck on the golf team!
